PURPOSE:To provide a cariostatic agent essentially free from side effects including the influences to enterobacterium, by using the cell of microorganisms belonging to Streptococcus genus or Lactobacillus genus or its aqueous extract as an active component. CONSTITUTION:The cell of microorganisms belonging to Streptococcus genus or Lactobacillus genus, preferably S. faecium (FERM BP-712 and BP-715), S. equinus (FERM BP-716), L. fermentum (FERM BP-715) and L. salivarius (FERM BP- 713), and/or its aqueous extract is used as an active component of the objective cariostatic agent. The active component has selective specific antibacterial spectrum characterized by the extremely effective suppressing or inhibiting effect to the proliferation of S. mutans and essentially no inhibiting effect to the main lactobacillus and E. coli in the intestines.
