PURPOSE:To increase the life and reduce the cost by combining the first paper layer made of predetermined glass fibers and the second paper layer arranged with predetermined glass fibers and acid-resistant fibrillar synthetic fibers in/one body. CONSTITUTION:A separator 1 consisting of composite layers of the first paper layer 1a made of glass fibers having an average fiber diameter of 0.1-2mu and the second paper layer 1b arranged with 99-90% of glass fibers having an average fiber diameter of 3-10mu and 1-10% of acid-resistant fibrillar synthetic fibers and formed in the same thickness or more as that of the first paper layer 1a is stacked between the positive electrode plate 10 and the negative electrode plate 9 of a battery so that the first paper layer 1a faces the plate surface, and this whole electrode plate group 11 is pressed and fixed in a battery far. Accordingly, the usage life can be increased and the production cost can be reduced.
