PURPOSE:To detect an error in original feeding accurately and speedily on the basis of output signals of image pickup means by providing image pickup means at plural positions in the breadthwise direction of the optical path of an optical system, and picking up an image of the front edge of an original which is conveyed to a final reference position on a platen. CONSTITUTION:While the optical system 5 and automatic original feeder 4 are fitted to the main frame 90 of the copying machine 1, two telecameras 91 are installed in the breadthwise direction of the optical path of the optical system 5 at an interval at the terminal end part in the optical path, i.e. exposure position on a photosensitive drum 7. Then, the front edge of the original conveyed from the automatic original feeder 3 to the final reference position on an original platen is photographed by the two telecameras 91, whose output signals 95 are sent out to a CRT display device 96; and a signal processing part 97 performs signal processing and the result is displayed on the display screen 98. The quantity of a shift in the front edge position of the original in the conveyance direction is measured quantitatively and the feed error of the automatic original feeder 3 is also measured and adjusted within a specific permissible error range.
