The invention relates to a stacking box 3 for a sorting machine, comprising means 6 for extracting articles 2 to be stacked from a conveyor 1 and arranging them on a support area 15. The articles are held in the box between a jogger pulley 7 which pushes them towards a jogging edge 46 and a movable blade 8. The movable blade is returned in the direction of the jogger pulley and of the deflection means by a counterweight 11 fixed to a cable 12 travelling 34 over a return pulley 13. The arrangement of the return means under the support area of the box makes it possible to avoid having to place these return means in the space 17 which separates two successive boxes of the same sorting machine. <IMAGE>
