The steering column for motor vehicles with adjustable inclination of the steering wheel consists of two parts which are connected to one another by means of a rocking joint with a transversely extending joint axle and can be releasably locked to one another by means of a locking element. This locking element is provided with a radial toothing which is arranged concentrically with respect to the joint axle, into which toothing the tooth segments on the two parts of the steering column engage, and is additionally axially movable to a limited degree on the axle of the joint of the two parts of the steering column.
