PURPOSE:To obtain an optical recording medium into which information can be written with low energy and which has an absorption wavelength conforming to the oscillating wavelength of a semiconductor laser, by providing a thin organic film consisting of a specified polymethine dye on a base. CONSTITUTION:A polymethine dye of formula I , wherein each of A, B, D and E is phenyl or heterocyclic ring which may be substituted, Y is a divalent residue required for forming a 5-membered or 6-membered ring, R is hydrogen or halogen, and X is an anion residue, is adhered to a plastic base such as a polyester film or a metallic base by vapor deposition or by applying together with a binder. The thickness of the optical recording medium thus produced is preferably about 0.05-5mum in the vapor deposition system and about 0.1-10mum in the coating system.
