In a method for converting data of a first data processing system, having a video screen output, for further processing in a second data processing system or data output system, which is not compatible per se, it is provided, in order to provide for arbitrary data transmission from one conventional system to another one without inserting specially constructed interfaces, that the video screen contents synthetically generated in the first data processing system and corresponding to a representation of lettering are picked up via a video output, that the instantaneous content of a screen page or of a part thereof is buffer-stored, that this content is read out and compared with patterns of lettering characters stored in a storage device for character recognition, and that the data corresponding to the lettering character pattern recognised by comparison are provided for further processing. Furthermore, a device for carrying out the method is described. This device is used as data converter for converting screen data.
