<p>A continuous steel casting machine in which the mold tube is oscillated without the attendant oscillation of a pressure-tight water cooling system, and in which the mold tube is cooled by a water spray system. The casting machine includes a frame (10) having a top (50) and bottom (42), and a vertically oriented mold tube (12) secured to the top (50) and extending within the frame. A plurality of spray tubes (32) are supported in the frame on opposite sides of the mold tube, and have spray nozzles (34) directed toward the mold tube to cool the mold tube and the steel therein. The sprays of water do not overlap by more than about one inch and are not spaced from one another by more than about one inch in the vertical direction where the sprays strike the mold tube. The sprays of water have a predetermined included spray angle and a gauge pressure upon exit from the spray nozzles such that the water sprays dissipate any steam barrier or layer that tends to form around the mold tube and at the same time effect cooling of molten metal in the mold tube.</p> |
