For flame-hardening the internal surface of a pipe, it is known to rotate the pipe and to pass a burner as well as a quenching rose, following the burner at a distance, non-rotatably through the pipe. However, this involves non-uniform hardening conditions, because the water jets emerging from the quenching rose do not uniformly wet the internal surface. To avoid these disadvantages, the invention provides a quenching rose 6 which rotates simultaneously with the pipe 1 in the same direction of rotation. For this purpose, a gear arrangement 8 can be provided which is connected to the rotary drive of the pipe 1. However, the quenching rose 6 can also be clamped to the pipe 1 in such a way that, although it is taken along by the pipe 1 in the circumferential direction, it is readily relatively displaceable in the longitudinal direction. If appropriate, the burner 4, alone or together with the quenching rose 6, can also rotate in the same direction of rotation simultaneously with the pipe 1. <IMAGE>
