A process for the chromatographic separation of a substance and apparatus for carrying out this process, in which a section filled with packings is subdivided into a multiplicity of unit sections, of which each is furnished with an inlet orifice and an outlet orifice, an elution fluid, for example an elution liquid or an elution gas, being introduced into a unit section in which a desired substance has been developed, in order to selectively extract the desired substance from the unit section.
