The device is applied only in the production of sewing machine needles. The aim of the invention is to provide a device which leads to a substantial saving in time and costs by comparison with visual monitoring. The function of the device according to the invention is to check the correct construction of the eye and of the protective groove for the thread, as well as their position relative to one another. This is achieved according to Figures 2 and 3 when there are arranged in series parallel to the needle axis and at an acute angle to the drive plane and perpendicular to the needle axis a radiation transmitter and a radiation receiver which is situated symmetrically relative to the latter with respect to the drive plane, and use is made of a second radiation transmitter situated opposite in the drive plane with respect to the needle axis and having three assigned, variously arranged radiation receivers. <IMAGE>
