NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R<1> is H or lower alkyl; R<2> is lower alkyl or aralkyl) or its acid addition salt. EXAMPLE:8-( 3-Methylamino-2-hydroxypropoxy )-3,4-dihydro-1,2-benzoxathiin-2,2- dioxide. USE:It has beta-blocking activity, and is useful as a remedy for arrhythmia, stenocardia, and hypertension. It has low toxicity and side effect, and long duration. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the novel compound of formula II with the amine of formula R<1>R<2>NH. The reaction is carried out in an alcoholic solvent at room temperature or under heating. The starting compound of formula II can be prepared from o-vaniline or formula III.
