NEW MATERIAL:An alpha-methyl-beta-(4-substituted phenyl)propionic acid halogenophenyl ester shown by the formula I (R is 1-15C alkyl, or alkoxy; n is 1 or 2; X is F, or Cl). EXAMPLE:alpha-Methyl-beta-(4-hexyloxyphenyl)propionic acid-4-fluoro-4'-biphenylyl ester. USE:Useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition. Capable extending a liquid crystal temperature range of a liquid crystal composition to a low temperature range, reducing its viscosity. PREPARATION:An alpha-methyl-beta-(4-substituted phenyl)propionic acid chloride shown by the formula II is reacted with a 4-halogenophenol or a 4-hydroxy-4'-halogenobiphenyl in the presence of pyridine, to give a compound shown by the formula I .
