16 In a magnetic layer of a magneto-optical modulator consisting of magnetic oxides, location-stable magnetic single domain areas are generated in that the areas of the layer present between the single domain areas to be formed are converted by means of reduction. The reduced areas of the layer show an increased electrical conductivity and may be used as electric conductor paths.
