A PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR COOLING AND PURIFYING A HOT GAS Hot crude synthesis gas leaving a gas generator at the top in upflow is quenched by injection of cold purified synthesis gas. The gas velocity is reduced and the gas stream is reversed downflow. The gas velocity is increased again . The gas stream is reversed in upflow and the gas velocity is decreased. A separation of part of the fly ash from the crude synthesis gas is obtained before it enters into a waste heat boiler. Therefore the WHB is less prone to blockage. The gas is further indirectly cooled in the WHB, flyash being separated.
