RECOVERY OF PUMP-OUT WASTE IN THE MELT SPINNING OF THERMOPLASTIC FILAMENTS

A method is disclosed for recovering pump-out waste from a process in which filaments of thermoplastic polymer are melt spun through a spinneret into an air chimney. The method comprises the steps of: (a)intercepting the filaments in the air chimney with a metal deflector plate positioned at an angle of between 60 and 80 degrees to the vertical, the deflector plate being adapted to allow the filaments to form lumps of recoverable size and to permit the lumps to slide down the deflector plate out of the air chimney, and (b)collecting the resulting lumps of pump-out waste.
