23 A layer of liquid crystal is present between two supporting plates of a display device and a large number of picture electrodes arranged in rows and columns are provided on one supporting plate. Strip-shaped row electrodes are provided between the rows or picture electrodes. Each row electrodes can be contacted with a row electrode by means of a micromechanical leaf spring. A large number of picture electrodes are also provided on the supporting plate. Strip-shaped column electrodes are provided between the columns of picture electrodes. The picture electrodes form the picture elements of the display device. The micromechanical leaf springs provide the liquid crystal with a sufficiently steep threshold with respect to the applied voltage and provided the liquid crystal with a memory. As a result of this the number of lines to be driven of the display device can be extended.
