PURPOSE:To obtain the titled yarn in an extremely shortened time required for calcination process, by treating spun yarn of carbonaceous pitch in an SO2- containing oxidizing gas atmosphere to give infusible yarn, heat-treating it in an inert gas atmosphere under specific conditions by raising the temperature. CONSTITUTION:A carbonaceous pitch such as petroleum pitch, etc. is subjected to melt spinning at a temperature >= its melting point, to give pitch yarn. Then, this pitch yarn is treated in an atmosphere of an oxidizing gas (preferably oxygen, ozone, air, nitrogen oxide, or halogen) containing 0.1-50vol. SO2, to form infusible yarn. Further, this infusible yarn is treated in an inert gas atmosphere at 450-600 deg.C in case of necessity, to give previously carbonized yarn containing oxygen. Then, the infusible yarn or the previously carbonized yarn is heat-treated at 2,000-3,000 deg.C by raising the temperature at <=40 deg.C/min, to give the desired graphitized yarn of pitch type.
