Metal wires carrying an insulating coating consisting of polymeric compositions based on polytetramethylene terephthalate (PTMT). Since PTMT polymers tend to be brittle, especially at elevated temperatures and when a flame retardant is incorporated therein, this problem is appreciably reduced by mixing the PTMT polymer with a second polymer which has a flexural modulus of 35 to 7,000 kg/cm<2> and a solubility parameter which does not differ by more than plus or minus 1.5 from that of the PTMT polymer, for example an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer or a block copolymer containing polyether and polyester blocks.
