The invention relates to a visual display device which uses a varistor as a switching element for controlling a layer of an electro-optical material. The object of the invention is to provide a structure comprising a substrate sheet 2 on which are deposited, on the same face 20 in contact with the electro-optical material 3, column conductors 22, column electrodes 21 and varistor studs 4 coupling column conductors 22 and column electrodes 21. The invention applies to the visual display of images transmitted in the form of a video signal. It provides a display screen having good rigidity, even when fabricated with large dimensions, which permits it to be used as an advertising or information panel. <IMAGE>
