PURPOSE:To produce the titled high-MW polymer excellent in impact strength, elongation, etc., in high yields, by polymerizing 3-methylbutene-1 in the presence of a specified organoaluminum compound as a catalyst for a solid titanium trichloride complex catalyst. CONSTITUTION:3-Methylbutene-1 is polymerized alone or copolymerized with other olefins by using a solid titanium trichloride complex catalyst having an Al content <=0.15 (in terns of an Al/Ti atomic ratio) and containing a complexing agent (e.g., AlCl3), e.g., a compound of the formula (wherein R1 is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, X is a halogen, and C is a complexing agent), 0<=n<=2, x<=0.15, and y>=0.001, and diisobutylaluminum monochloride as an organoaluminum catalyst. By using the above catalyst combination, it is possible to produce in a high catalyst efficiency a high-MW 3-methylbutene-1 polymer having excellent properties such as impact strength, and elongation and heretofore, being difficult to produce.
