PURPOSE:To prevent a magnetic tape from being slackened at the time of transfer to a high speed reproducing state or a high speed reverse reproducing state by driving a capstan motor at a speed slower than a high rotational speed only for a previously fixed period, then driving the capstan motor at the prescribed high rotational speed. CONSTITUTION:When a high speed reproducing switch is depressed at a time t1 in a motor driving type magnetic recording and reproducing device having a motor for driving a capstan shaft and a motor for driving independently a reel board, the capstan motor is rotated at a speed of 1/3 of a reproducing high speed NC during a time T1 by a motor control circuit and a timer circuit, and then rotated at a prescribed speed NC for high speed reproducing. On the other hand, a winding motor is immediately set up to a prescribed high reproducing speed by depressing a high speed reproducing switch. Thus, the influence of the delay of rotational rise of the winding reel motor is reduced by setting up the time T1 and controlling the motor speed and the slack of the tape at the transfer can be reduced.
