PURPOSE:To enable impactless start of an engine by joining a sleeve member engaged with the external periphery of a drive shaft via a straight spline, with a one-way clutch via a helical spline and having a resilient member bear a thrust force applied to the sleeve member. CONSTITUTION:When a magnet switch 16 is electrified and a lever 19 is moved, a pinion 2a is pushed forth by the lever 19 via a one-way clutch 2. And before abutment of the pinion 2a with a ring gear 7, a magnet switch 16 is opened and a starter motor 15 is then driven to turn an armature shaft 9. The turning of the shaft 9 revolves a drive shaft 3 via planetary gear reduction mechanism (4, 9a and 11). The pinion 2a is turned by the revolution of the drive shaft 3 via a sleeve member 1 joined with both the shaft 3 and a clutch outer 2d via straight spline and helical spline, which are formed on the outside and the inside face thereof, and at the same time, engaged with a ring gear 17. The impact produced at the engagement time is absorbed by a resilient member 7. |
