The inlaying device is intended to inlay a front-stage image p filmed in front of a background f in a back-stage image d. Firstly, the front-stage image and the background are provided in the form of primary signals Rb, Gb, Bb by a camera 1, the front-stage image is inlaid in a specified image x having an artificial primary colour by means of a colouring device 3 and a first coded video signal b' corresponding to the inlaid image obtained previously is recorded in a video recorder 5. The inlaying proper is carried out subsequently, off-line, by means of an inlaying circuit 6 receiving the first coded video signal b' and a second coded video signal representing the back-stage image d and provided by a video recorder 2 for example. The specified image x replacing the background f enables the contour of the front-stage image to be accurately recovered for all the horizontal scan lines. <IMAGE>
