Method and apparatus for testing the quality of viscous liquids

In a method for testing the quality of viscous liquids which have a setting point and are contaminated with solids, to measure the density the temperature of the liquid is raised above the setting point. A body of previously known weight is introduced into the heated liquid and its immersion depth is determined. To determine the degree of contamination, the liquid is introduced into a gap between two surfaces which fit one another in a particular manner and the frictional resistance is determined by displacement of at least one of the two surfaces with respect to the other. The implementation of the method is characterised in that a container which receives the liquid whose density is to be measured and a temperature-regulating device are combined in an enclosure to form one unit. The surfaces for determining the degree of contamination have a fit which corresponds to the size of the solid components to be expected.
