A method and a device for generating information with respect to discontinuities and mass throughput are described, which operate by means of a system based on the Doppler effect, in which ultrasonic pulses, which have been reflected from the discontinuities, are converted into frequency spectra or approximations of frequency spectra, on the basis of which the discontinuities can be identified and their concentration can be determined and, in combination with speed information obtained from the Doppler effect, the mass flow or throughput can be measured.
