Novel pyrimidines of the formula <IMAGE> in which R denotes OH or Cl, and R1 and R2 independently of one another denote hydrogen, hydroxyl or C1-4-alkyl, and a process for their preparation are described. The novel compound are useful intermediates for the preparation of optical brighteners of the 4-[pyrimidine-(2)-yl]stilbene series.
