PURPOSE:To take a lengthwise measurement by obtaining freely the quantity of extension of a linear body as the quantity of rotation of a rotor having high- and low-magnetic-permeability members arranged alternately on its peripheral surface, and developing based upon the quantity of rotation across a secondary coil. CONSTITUTION:Members 11 and 12 having a high and a low magnetic permeability value are arranged alternately on the peripheral surface 17 of the rotor 16 supported rotatably on a shaft 19 in a casing 20; and plural primary and secondary coils 13 and 14 are arranged on the internal surface 21 of the casing 20 and the coils 14 are connected differentially to the coils 13 connected to an AC power source. A claw (not shown in figure) is fitted atop of the linear body 15 which is taken up in a bobbin 23 fitted coaxially with the shaft 19 and extended freely, and the claw is extended along a groove (not shown in figure) to be measured to rotate the rotor 16, so that the difference in induced voltage among the coils 14 corresponding to the quantity of rotation of the rotor 16 is led out as a displacement output voltage.
