The invention relates to a walking-beam conveyor which is particularly suitable for conveying steel billets in heating ovens. The conveyor consists of mobile walking beams (120) which are initially lifted vertically by liquid cushions above the level of the oven bed and are then shifted horizontally in the direction of advance, while the walking beams can be moved during the horizontal retraction movement, either by the fluid cushions again or by conventional kinematic devices.
