In the operating method of a device arrangement combined of laser transmitter (12) and thermal imager, which only has one common receiving channel (9) and scanning mirror (8), it is essential that the mirror assumes an advantageous angular position for receiving a narrow-band CO2 radiation reflected from the target. To ensure this, the frequency of the scanning function is retarded in such a manner that the mirror is only moved by a fraction of the pixel width and as a result the rear edge of the amplitude receives a flattened shape. The result is that the projections of the detector element, which otherwise come to lie in the outer areas of the laser pulse projected in the object plane (target) are more closely coincident at the beginning and at the end of the range finding process (broken line). <IMAGE>
