PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals, etc., by the addition reaction of formaldehyde and an aldehyde other than formaldehyde using a catalyst comprising a conjugated base of an inexpensive N-substituted thiazolium ion. CONSTITUTION:The objective 1-hydroxy-2-one compound (e.g. 1-hydroxy-2-pentanone) can be produced by the addition reaction of (A) formaldehyde (e.g. paraformaldehyde) with (B) an aldehyde other than formaldehyde (e.g. n-butylaldehyde) in the presence of (C) a conjugated base of the N-substituted thiazolium ion prepared easily by the reaction of (i) the N-substituted thiazolium salt of formula I [R is alkyl, etc.; Y<1> and Y<2> are H, halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, etc.; Y<1> and Y<2> may together form cycloalkene, aromatic ring, heterocyclic group, etc.; A is Cl, Br, I, NO3, etc.)] with (ii) a base. |
