The invention relates to a process for the preparation of compounds of the formula I in which X and Y independently of one another are fluorine, chlorine or bromine and one of the radicals can also be hydrogen, characterised in that compounds of the formula II are oxidised with nitric acid at elevated temperature and elevated pressure to give compounds of the formula III and these are isolated and freed from nitric acid and then hydrogenated under mild conditions to give the compounds of the formula I. The compounds of the formula I are highly suitable, for example, as diazo components.
