In order to reduce the pollutant-containing exhaust gas emissions produced hitherto in internal combustion engines and to reduce insufficient utilisation of the fuel, caused inter alia by ignition devices which are inadequate and not immune to faults, the said devices are replaced by a high-voltage, distributor-free ignition system which supplies each spark plug from the associated ignition coil by means of a high-voltage of approximately 40 kV without DC isolation and the performance of the correctly sequenced selection of the ignition coil identification is assumed by an encoding device. Instead of, the large number, currently still required, of individual components of a mechanical type for the ignition systems of the various engines and their manufacturers, the distributor-free ignition system is configured for an 8-cylinder engine at maximum and, viewed overall, consists of a relatively large number of individual components but of a small number of different assemblies which, if the crankshaft drive wheel and the cam shaft drive wheel - with toothed belt drive - are standardised, can to the largest possible extent be used to complement and replace one another even between the engines and manufacturers.
