PURPOSE:To enable to reduce memory capacity, by a method wherein the contents of a conversion table are read on the basis of a starting address, and left- side space information, generated character information and right-side space information are sequentially set into a buffer memory. CONSTITUTION:Character information is stored and a character-generating conversion table 3c is provided in a character-generating memory 3, and width data of space information (information on the spaces to be provided on the left and right sides of each character) and character information are stored in the table 3c. Based on coded printing information fed through an interface 4, a reading address for the table 3c is calculated by a CPU4, the contents of the table 3c are read on the basis of the starting address, then the left-side space information, the generated character information and the right-side space information are sequentially set into a printing buffer 2, and printing is conducted by a thermal head 7. Accordingly, the capacity of the character-generating memory in the printer can be effectively utilized.
