A battery, especially an accumulator with aqueous electrolytes or a high energy battery, is monitored for defects in the operation of the battery and failure of individual battery cells. For this purpose, the symmetry of the battery is monitored and evaluated, in that the battery is formed from at least two identical battery parts (10) connected in series, and electrical leads (14) are connected to the electrical terminals (11, 12, 13) of the individual battery parts (10), which leads (14) are electrically connected to a circuit arrangement (15) for measuring the voltage difference between in each case two battery parts (10).
