PURPOSE:To strengthen dehumidifying power and reduce the width of room temperature variation by a method wherein gentle airflow operation area is elongated and dehumidifying operation is effected until frost adheres to an evaporator, thereafter, the operation of a compressor is stopped after effecting temporarily defrosting operation in a reverse cycle system. CONSTITUTION:The dehumidifying operation is effected by operating the compressor with room cooling mode under gentle airflow ventilating operation effected to strengthen the deprivation of latent heat, however, when the dehumidifying operation is continued for a while, frosting is caused on the evaporator and the surface temperature of the evaporator is reduced, therefore, the deprivation of latent heat is increased and the strong defrosting operation is effected. During this period, the room temperature is reduced gradually, therefore, the dehumidifying operation is switched to the defrosting operation of reverse cycle system when the room temperature has arrived at a set temperature, then, the compressor is stopped after the room temperature has arrived at the defrosting temperature area and the operation of the compressor is waited until the room temperature is increased again to the area of set temperature. During this period, a fan is operated temporarily under weak airflow operation, whose ventilating force is stronger than the gentle airflow operation in order to generate air stream in the room and improve the temperature and humidity distribution in the room especially in the second half of the dehumidifying operation area.
