PURPOSE:To simplify substantially development of an algorithm at every processing and to enable recognition of a character pattern with high accuracy by performing operations including feature extraction and discrimination by one recognition system such as a complex similarity method. CONSTITUTION:An analog signal A is inputted to a quantizer circuit 10, converted into a binarization signal and stored in a sheet buffer 11. An image pattern read out from said buffer 11 is transmitted to respective feature extraction circuits 13a-13z, and respective features with respect to image patterns are extracted. They consist of data such as the same linear space vector necessary for recognition of a complex similarity method. A matching/identification circuit 14 performs matching of respective feature patterns with respective to standard patterns Pa-Pz stored in a memory 15, and the recognition is executed by the complex similarity method. Respective standard patterns Pa-Pz are optimized patterns in accordance with the identification of each feature pattern. A recognition control part 16 edits each identified result, and outputs the final recognized result with respect to an image pattern.
