PURPOSE:To enable extraction of each character information consisting of the same character by classifying an area which each character information accounts for in picture memory by the size and string, deciding a typical point of each area concerned. CONSTITUTION:A classification circuit 7 classifies the area concerned at every area based on a parameter Lmax having the magnitude outputted from a magnitude arithmetic circuit 5. The classification circuit 7 classifies an area which each character information accounts for in a picture memory 2 at every near magnitude area. A relative distance arithmetic circuit 8 calculates a relative distance between areas classified by said circuit 7 from its center address data. An inclination arithmetic circuit 9 calculates an inclination of a line connecting to interareas from the center address data. Said arithmetic circuit 9 calculates inclinations M(i,j) of areas Ei and Ej.
