PURPOSE:To improve the handling strength of an ion-exchange membrane and to prevent the membrane from being wrinkled during its use, by impregnating an ion-exchange membrane composed of a carboxyl group-contg. polymer with a specified quantity of a hydrophilic org. solvent. CONSTITUTION:A cation-exchange membrane composed of a carboxyl group- contg. polymer is immersed in or coated with a hydrophilic org. solvent (e.g. alcohol, aldehyde or amide) or an aq. soln. thereof to thereby impregnate the membrane with 0.1-50wt% (based on the quantity of the membrane) org. solvent, thus pretreating said ion-exchange membrane. In this way, handling strength, particularly folding endurance is improved to provide an ion-exchange membrane which is easy to handle. By this pretreatment, dimensional changes during its use, e.g., electrolysis, are inhibited to thereby prevent the membrane from being wrinkled and to prevent troubles such as increase in cell voltage, the breakage of the membrane etc., caused by wrinkling. Further, lowering in strength due to fine cracks of the membrane can be inhibited.
