PURPOSE:To attain excellent reproducibility of gray gradation in a reproduced picture by providing a digital pulse width converter converting an output digital signal of an analog-digital converter into a pulse width according to plural pairs of predetermined function relations and a means selecting pairs at each sub-scanning line. CONSTITUTION:A picture signal (e) subject to digital conversion is applied to a storage device 18 as a read address. Then a memory cell corresponding to a digital picture signal value at that time is selected in the storage device 18. A specific memory cell in the storage device 18 is selected at first according to the digital output value of the analog-digital converter 17, and a binary signal of a time series having a pulse width in response to the digital value is outputted to an output terminal of the storage device 18. The pulse signal (g) is impressed to each signal electrode of a printer by a latch signal (h) having a period corresponding to the picture element interval of the printer side and a print or a reproduced picture having the gray gradation (intermediate tone) reproducibility is obtained.
