PURPOSE:The titled composition, obtained by fixing antimicrobial silver, copper or zinc ions on ion exchange groups of zeolite by exchange reaction, stable in various media, and having improved prolonged duration of effect and water and heat resistance, etc. CONSTITUTION:A particulate antimicrobial composition, containing natural or synthetic zeolite as a carrier, ion exchangeable metal, contained in the above- mentioned zeobite, and substituted by a metal selected from silver, copper and zinc, and having preferably <=2.6mum average particle diameter in the state of containing water of crystallization or anhydrous state. The content of the antimicrobial metal is 0.0006-4% silver, 0.03-10% copper and 0.04-14% zinc based on the anhydrous state. The above-mentioned composition is obtained by reacting zeolite with a solution containing the above-mentioned metal ions at <=7pH, adding a binder to the metal-substituted zeolite, wet kneading the resultant mixture with water or an aqueous solution of urea, molding the kneaded mixture into a given shape, drying the molded material, and firing the dried material within a temperature region below the thermal decomposition starting temperature of the zeolite.
