NEW MATERIAL:2,2'-Dihydroxy-1,1'-biphenanthryl shown by the formula I . USE:Containing two kinds of optical isomers, useful for asymmetric reduction reaction, asymmetric discrimination reaction as crown ether, asymmetric catalytic reduction, and useful as an asymmetric polymerization initiator, etc. Having improved steric regularity, showing improved asymmetric induction ability when used in asymmetric synthetic reaction. Use as an agent for optical resolution may be considered. PREPARATION:For example, phenanthrol is reacted with acetyl-acetonatomagnesium in a solvent of acetonitrile in N2 flow for 1hr with stirring under reflux, a catalyst is removed by filtration, and the solvent is distilled away. A crude reaction product is purified by the use of silica gel chromatography with benzene as a developing agent, recrystallized with benzene-hexane to give a racemic modification shown by the formula. It is subjected to optical resolution by the use of a column for optical resolution by high-speed liquid chromatography, to give an optically active substance shown by the formula.
