PURPOSE:To make it possible to treat materials to be roasted, e.q. coffee beans, without emitting smoke generated in roasting the materials to the outside, by burning the smoke discharged from the interior of a rotating drum in a clearance between the rotating drum and a reignition hood surrounding the rotating drum. CONSTITUTION:A roasting apparatus is located to position the caloric heat from below under many small hole groups (31a') formed in the bottom part (31a) of the bottom fixed part 31 of a reignition hood 3. Materials to be roasted, e.g. coffee beans, are then charged into the rotating drum 2. The interior of the rotating drum 2 is filled with smoke as the coffee beans are roasted, and the smoke is discharged through many small holes (21b') formed in the drum part (21b) of the drum body 21 into the reignition hood 3. The smoke discharged into the reignition hood 3 is led to a clearance between the bottom fixed part 31 and the drum part (21b) of the drum part (21b), and caloric heat is applied from below to reignite the smoke. Thus, combustible materials and gases contained in the led smoke are burnt up by the above-mentioned reignition, and harmful substances, etc. are not discharged to the outside.
