PURPOSE:To produce the titled novel block copolymer having excellent transparence, and antistatic activity durable even in wet state, by the block copolymerization of a specific acrylic acid derivative having hydrophilic group with vinyl chloride at a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:An alkali metal (meth)acrylate or a hydroxyl-containing (meth) acrylic acid ester (e.g. 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) is polymerized in 1,2,2-trifluorochloroethane in the presence of a peroxide, etc., and the organic solvent is recovered under reduced pressure. Thereafter, vinyl chloride monomer is added to the system, and polymerized to obtain the objective copolymer composed of 1- 90wt% unit of formula I [X is H or alkyl; Y is COOM (M is alkali metal), COOR1OH (R1 is alkylene), group of formula II (R2 is aliphatic hydrocarbon residue) or group of formula III (Z is SO3H, SO3M or quaternary ammonium salt) and 10-99wt% vinyl chloride unit of formula IV.
