PURPOSE:The first agent for permanent wave obtained by incorporating a lipophilic nonionic surfactant and a hydrophilic surfactant in the first agent for the permanent wave consisting essentially of a mercapto compound without a peculiar mercaptan smell. CONSTITUTION:The first agent for permanent wave, obtained by incorporating a lipophilic surfactant expressed by formula I [R1 is 14-22C alkyl or alkenyl; n is 1-10 (average value)], e.g. polyoxymethylene myristyl ether, with a hydrophilic surfactant expressed by formula II (R2 is 10-22C alkyl or alkenyl; X is hydrophilic group), e.g. an alkyl (alkenyl) sulfate ester salt, at 0.3-0.9mol fraction of the compound expressed by formula I to the total of the compounds expressed by formulas I and II to give 0.1-50wt% sum of the compounds expressed by formulas I and II in the total amount, and consisting essentially of a mercapto compound. EFFECT:Wave effect is not deteriorated.
