PURPOSE:In preparing the titled optically active substance by reducing an unsymmetrical ketone or imine, to obtain the titled compound in high optical ratio advantageously, by strengthening steric regularity by the use of optically active 10,10'-dihydroxy-9,9'-biphenanthryl. CONSTITUTION:An unsymmetrical ketone or imine is reduced with a metal hydride reagent by the use of optical active 10,10'-dihydroxy-9,9'-biphenanthryl, to give an optically active alcohol or amine useful as an intermediate for drugs, agricultural chemicals, or perfume, etc. at a temperature about room temperature in a short time easily in high optical purity in high yield. 10,10'-dihydroxy- 9,9'-biphenanthryl is easily synthesized by asymmetric dimerization reaction using a copper-amine complex from 9-hydroxyphenanthrene.
