NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 1-15C alkyl or 1-15C alkoxy; n is 1 or 2). EXAMPLE:beta-(4-Heptyloxyphenyl)propionic acid 4'-cyano-4-biphenylyl ester. USE:A liquid crystal composition. It has a dielectric anisotropy of about +10, and has high stability to moisture, heat, light, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting the beta- (4-substituted phenyl)propionic acid of formula II with 4-cyanophenol (n=1) or 4-hydroxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (n=2) of formula III in the presence of pyridine.
