A cast refractory, particularly for use in glass melting furnaces, contains 24-27% silica, 23-27% zirconia, and an oxide of an alkali metal, the structure having large mullite crystals surrounded by smaller zirconia and mullite crystals and all embedded in a glassy matrix.
