PURPOSE:To obtain modified pitch which is free from light fractions and is useful as raw material for carbon fiber, etc., by performing catalytic treatment of a byproduct ethylene heacy end at a specified temp. in the presence of a solid acid catalyst and after removal of catalyst, treating the product at a specified temp. in the presence of pressurized hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene heavy end obtained as byproduct of ethylene production by thermal cracking of petroleum cut is subjected to catalytic treatment at 250- 450 deg.C in the presence of a solid acid catalyst (e.g. silica/alumina and silica gel) (1st-step reaction). Filtrate after removal of catalyst contained in the reaction soln. of the 1st-step reaction is treated at 400-500 deg.C in the presence of pressurized hydrogen without use of catalyst (2nd-step reaction). Combination of the two reaction steps reduces formation of coke to zero and produces pitch which has an aromatic content of 50-90% excluding light fractions having a boiling point of upto 500 deg.C and is useful as raw material for carbon fiber, etc.
