The invention relates to a method and burner for burning fuel arising from household or vegetable waste packed into relatively restricted volumes (granules, battens, chips, etc.), at a relatively low temperature, and to this end this fuel is made to circulate by gravity in a column (combustion chamber) and fuel air crosses this column perpendicularly. It comprises: a substantially vertical chamber 11, 12, 13 cooled by a double wall, or tubes 24, 28 for the circulation of water or air, connected by upper 15 to 17 and lower 19 to 21 manifolds. Arranged approximately at mid-height are an opening 3, arranged to allow the oxidising air to pass through horizontally, and a rear opening 4 equipped with a tube 9 allowing the inside of the chamber of the burner to be made to communicate with a boiler, hot air exchanger, or other apparatus. There is an opening 2 for continuous feed and a lower opening 5 for the evacuation of cinders. The assembly rests on an underframe comprising an ashbox and its emptying means. <IMAGE>
